THE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE LANDLADY
The main character (the landlady)
The main character in this short story is the landlady. But his specific name are not given. She has a difference of character that make she is the main character in this short story. Firstly, she is friendly, warm and hospitable. The sentences that show she is friendly are “I will give a cup of tea”. Then she give him a warm welcoming smile “please come in”, she said pleasantly. Apart from that, she also shows that she is a kind person and generous person. She is showing it by caring about the Billy that has stay in her house. Then, she also good is looking. It’s proving by the sentences “a pleasant face with round pink and very gentle blue eyes. She also is in middle-aged about forty-five years old.
Apart from that, she also a caring person and show it by put a hot water bottle between the sets to air them”. Then she also clean shall all the surrounding of his house. Then, the landlady also is a rich woman. Even she is rich, but she is lonely. This is because she doesn’t have any children and leave by her husband. Then I also can find that the landlady is a cunning woman because she can cover all the bad things about her. But, lastly I know that the landlady is a cruel woman and she is also evil. This is because she has killed the renters by preserving their bodies in the boarding house. She is also a serial killer. So, the landlady uses two characters in this short story.
Billy Weaver
Billy Weaver is the character that also can say as a main character like the landlady. Billy Weaver is a traveler young man and his age is seventeen years old. He is a working at the office that near to the landlady home at The Bell and Dragon. At the beginning he shows that he is a greedy man because he wanted a lower price for the lodging. Besides that, he also wanted to be a business man and going bath to report himself at the Branch Manager. Then he also shows that he is easily attracted to the sweet talk and kindness of the landlady. So, he is like if the landlady caring about him. Lastly, he is also easily to trust other people without knowing who they are and what danger he might face. Other, he also easily impress to the landlady.
Besides that, the other character in this short story is Christopher Mulholland and Gregory W. Temple. But they are not performing in all the part of the story. They is the focus in topic that the landlady and Billy talking of at a day. They is the character that were killed by the landlady
Themes.
The main theme of this short story is about the deception and appearance of the landlady compared to who the really landlady at the beginning. She is warm and kind but at the end of this story I found that she is a serial killer. It’s show at the climax of this story where we can know that she the killer that have kill two of men who are renters of the house. There is balance of evil or innocent goodness. Apart from that, another theme is about the cruel and violent. It’s due to the character of the landlady. She is very kindness at beginning and at the last we know she is actually a serial killer. From all the above, I can conclude that we cannot just look the other person at the physical but must be include all part of their characteristic. Like “don’t judge a book by its cover”. It’s mean we can use the sentences to describe about the landlady seems very kind but she is actually a very cruel person.
Moral Value.
From the short story that I have read, I get some moral value that I should make it as my followed to protected myself from the problem. Firstly, we must be alert to the surrounding. Billy show it when he tried to ask about the Christopher Mulholland and Gregory W. Temple. He also tried to get the explanation from the landlady about the two boys. Lastly, from the question that he was asking he know the landlady is a serial killer. Other, we should not easily to believe other people especially that we are don’t know anything about they. In this short story, Billy believes the landlady because she is a kindness person. So, he makes a wrong perception to the person that he knows just for a one day. This is because the landlady is not same like he thinks because she is the serial killer. Besides that we should not to be a violent person such as the landlady. She has killed the person who is not making any wrong to her. Then we are also cannot to be cutting other people like the landlady. She firstly is a kindness and caring person but lastly we know that she is the cruel person that has killed other people. Then from the short story also we should be a caring and kindness person. It does will make other people look up us as a good person.
After I read this short story, I have learn something that is very useful for me as a student. It is because I am studying far from my hometown. So, my condition is similar with Billy because I also will ask for lodging outside from the institute on next time. At the beginning, I feel that the landlady is a kind person and as a main character, I think she should be a good character. Beside I also know that the landlady most likely helped other people by give lower charges to the new people that want to rent the house.
Apart from that, I also know that this short story is fully about the lifestyle of a serial killer. The Billy’s perception about the landlady such an old woman was slightly dotty and the fact that landlady appeared to be slightly off her rocker. Besides, at the exposition of the short story, the writer introduces Billy Weaver, a man that want to find a fairly cheap place and compare The Bell and Dragon Hotel with boarding house. Then something happen to him at the beginning of the short story .The word “BED AND BREAKFAST” attracted him. Then he decided to stay at the boarding house. The lodging is very cheap than the hotel. Billy was also attracted by the landlady kindness.
After that, at the climax of the story, Billy learnt about the other two renters before him and began to think that the landlady is a weird woman. Then, the real identity of the landlady slowly revealed, who is actually a serial killer. Last but not least, I also know that at the climax of the story, the landlady had killed her renters by preserving their dead bodies in the boarding house. So it changes my mind about her characteristic that is initially shown as a kind person at the beginning of the story. That is all for my personal response about this short story.
